LIFT WEIGHTS TO LOSE WEIGHT!
Did you know that one pound of muscle burns 80
calories a day? And one pound of fat burns ONE
calorie a day?! That's not a misprint. ONE POUND OF
MUSCLE BURNS 80 CALORIES. ONE POUND OF FAT
BURNS ONE! This means that if you can gain five
pounds of muscle, you have increased your
metabolism by 400 calories a day! Since one pound
of bodyweight equals 3500 calories, at that rate you
would lose about a pound every 9 days.
The inverse
is also true. If you LOSE five pounds of muscle (due
to skipping meals, starvation, lack of protein, or lack
of weight-training), you will burn 400 calories LESS
per day. See why 95% of dieters gain their weight
back within two years? These dead-end methods of
weight loss perpetuate the cycle of losing muscle,
then gaining fat later.
How should all of this
affect your training program? It's imperative that you
include plenty of WEIGHT-TRAINING in a
WEIGHT LOSS program. From exercise
research (and my
experience), aerobic activities such as the elliptical
machine, treadmill, Stairmaster, and
stationary bike only go so far toward weight loss
because they lack one thing: the ability to
increase
muscle mass and significantly elevate
metabolism.
For all of
my members and potential members who often
communicate to me that they "don't want to lift
weights, but just want to lose weight," I tell them
they're missing the payoff. Lift weights TO
lose weight. Your leaner body and new, improved
metabolism will thank you.
