CARBS: THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE UGLY
|
Hopefully, you've taken the first step
to getting lean.............eating protein every three
hours. The next step is RESTRICTING YOUR CARBS.
Whether it be the Atkins or South Beach diet,
restricting your carbs is essential to keeping your
blood sugar at moderate to low levels throughout the
day. This will force your body to tap into your fat
stores for energy. But not all carbs are created
equal. Here's the skinny.
THE GOOD: The best carbs are those
that digest slowly and have a minimal effect on blood
sugar. Your mother was right..................eat your
peas. Choose dark green vegetables (broccoli, green
beans, peas, asparagus, Brussel sprouts), high-
water/low-calorie veggies (lettuce, tomatoes,
cucumbers), slow-digesting grains (oatmeal), and a
moderate amount of high-fiber fruits (apples,
oranges, strawberries, blueberries, grapefruit).
THE BAD: Although not entirely bad,
these carbs have nutritional value but spike blood
sugar much like sugary junk food. Restrict the
starchy "white carbs" and other grains from refined
white flour. Sorry................but these include some
of your favorites: pasta, potatoes, rice, breads,
cereals, bagels, pancakes, waffles, etc. They are
too high in calories, and spike blood sugar too
drastically to be eaten regularly on a get-lean diet
plan.
THE UGLY: This goes without saying.
Dump the simple sugars such as regular soda,
chocolate, candy, cakes, pies, cookies, and any
other pastry being sold at the local bake sale. Milk
products such as ice cream, and even yogurt and
skim milk get all their carbs from lactose, a.k.a.,
SUGAR! Nobody, and I mean NOBODY, is getting lean
on these treats.
In a nutshell, eat 20-40 grams of protein every
three hours, and get almost all of your carbs from
fibrous vegetables. Consider everything else a
treat!
